This was amazing. Jimmy got to sing "With a Little Help from My Friends" with Ringo Starr (accompanied by Ben Harper and Relentless7) last night on the show. So by the power of logic, can we deduce that Jimmy is friends with Ringo Starr.
I don't think there was a single Late Night staff member who didn't feel proud of this moment! Or at least insanely jealous.
Last night was a very special night here at Late Night. The legendary Beatles drummer, Ringo Starr spent the entire show with us and performed "I Wanna Be Your Man," "Walk With You," "The Other Side of Liverpool" and "With a Little Help From My Friends." During the rehearsal for the best Christmas performance ever, there was a fair amount of down-time while our crew adjusted cameras and lighting. It was glorious to watch Kermit, Miss Piggy, Animal, and all the other Muppets interact with Jimmy - in character - even when we weren't on air. At one particular moment, Jimmy randomly broke into the song made famous by Three Dog Night, "One." Pretty soon, his felty friends joined in, followed by The Roots. Luckily for you, our cameras happened to be rolling, and we were able to capture for you this completely spontaneous and adorable moment:
The only thing missing from this is Zoot with a haunting sax solo and a "deeeep, man" from Janice.
Last night LA duo Shwayze performed "Get U Home". Watch it here.

Earlier today we took a look at 5 Unintentionally Scary Songs which of course got me thinking about actual great songs to play on or near Halloween. What do you think is the best Halloween song?
DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince - "Nightmare On My Street"
"I strolled back home with a grin on my grill I think that since this is a dream I might as well get ill."
Bobby "Boris" Pickett - "The Monster Mash"
"For my monster from his slab began to rise, and suddenly to my surprise, he did the mash."

On Friday's show, Gina Gershon played her mouth harp with The Roots. It was pretty badass. It got me thinking - beyond the standard guitar, keys, bass, and drums, which lesser known instruments are totally (and surprisingly) badass? Don't worry, the recorder will NOT be making an appearance on this list.

It is such a treat to be able to watch The Roots play every night. One of the overwhelming favorites of Late Night with Jimmy Fallon is the creativity and thought The Roots put in to deciding what songs to play as each guest walks on. Can you name why they played what they played? We've been keeping track of all the songs for you! Here's the most recently updated list:
Dylan McDermott: "We the People Who Are Darker Than Blue", Curtis Mayfield
Wendy Williams: "Maneater", Hall and Oates

A few weeks ago we posted a list of 19 Singing Performances That You Probably Didn't Expect to be so Good about actors/actresses that were not primarily known for their musical talent that needed to rise to the occasion for the specific role that they were playing. Note: All actors/actresses are actually singing in these performances. Who are your favorites? Who else is missing (don't forget to look at Part 1)?

As I am sure you know by now, last night on the show we had The Jonas Brothers as musical guests. I heard a lot of talk around the office comparing The Jonas Brothers to other similar bands that that are also comprised (or mostly comprised) of brothers. There was a clear generational divide on which band is preferred, as well as a preference to a certain style of music. Who do you think is the best BAND OF BROTHERS?

In case you missed the show on Friday, The Roots (and very special guest Erykah Badu!!!) paid tribute to Michael Jackson by performing his hits in and out from each commercial. I was lucky enough to stand in the studio to witness this, and it was amazing. Check it out: watch the full episode here.
In the meantime, you absolutely must check out this Michael Jackson video from 1989, for his song "Liberian Girl." I had never seen this before, despite being an MTV junky back then. Anyway, to attempt to describe it in words would be futile. All I can say is that it's kind of a time capsule for 1989 - because seriously, every single famous person from 1989 is in this video. Don't believe me? Watch. IT. IS. AMAZING.
"Awwww Mike!"
Thanks to Patrick for the tip!

The Roots were both house band AND musical guest last night, and I don't think I need to tell you that they fired on all cylinders. They performed the song "How I Got Over" from their new album of the same name - with a beefed up band and even some fine little dance moves. This was an amazing performance, and it was great to see them really do what they do best. Watch the performance here, or click on the picture below.

Last night's performance was so amazing. On Friday's LNWJF, Mandy Moore stopped by with her band to play "I Could Break Your Heart Any Day of the Week." If you didn't see it or want to see it again, you can watch it by clicking HERE.
While watching Mandy play, I started to notice something else about Mandy's band --who was that playing bass? And why wasn't Sara Schaefer at her desk? Why is she never around when Mandy Moore's band is playing? What is going on here? Is Mandy Moore's bassist our very own Sara Schaefer? Let's look at the similarities:
PICTURE EVIDENCE #1

PICTURE EVIDENCE #2

Same hair, same glasses, same face, mad bass skills, similar clapping technique. It certainly looks like her to me. Why didn't she ever tell us that she played bass for Mandy Moore?!
This just in: I just asked Sara if that was her and she said, "no." I'm still not convinced. But for reals, it turns out that it's musician Kelly Jones from right here in NYC.
Oh how I love a sweet tribute band. For those of you who don't know, a tribute band or cover band is a music group, singer, or musician who specifically plays the music of a well-known music act, often (but not always) one which has disbanded or stopped touring.
Think Elvis impersonators or Mini Kiss. However, most tribute acts are full bands that usually name themselves based on the original band's name, a song or an album.
Can you name which of these tribute bands are real and which I made up? (no cheating)
1. Us Also
The U2 Tribute Band
2. Into the Bleach
The Blondie Tribute Band
3. Prints
The Prince Tribute Band
4. Bel Biv Devotion
The Bel Biv Devoe Tribute Band
5. Fan Halen
The Van Halen Tribute Band
6. Gathers No Moss
The Rolling Stones Tribute Band

My grandma used to say that country music will make you smile or it will make you cry - there is no in between. With a chorus like "I gave up smokin', women, and drinkin' last night and it was the worst 15 minutes of my life," this is definitely one that made me smile. See Rodney Atkins' performance of "15 Minutes" here.

Last night The-Dream performed on our show, complete with hot backup dancers! Who is The-Dream you ask? Um...he's the man responsible for Rihanna's "Umbrella" and Beyonce's "Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)" - that's who he is. While he's not writing and producing smash hits, he's performing his own music, which is exactly what he did on LNWJF last night. Smooth. Watch the performance!

I think what's happening here is each person is assigned a note from a piano and when there candle lights up they sing that note for however long their light is lit. Great idea.
The season eight winner of American Idol, from Conway Arkansas, Kris Allen, is a guest on LNWJF tonight. Here he is performing an acoustic cover of Kanye West's "Heartless."

One year after his American Idol win, David Cook is still rocking strong - as he proved last night on the show. Also, we had a surprise performance of "So What'cha Want" by the Beastie Boys. Chrisette Michele rocked out my jam "Epiphany" (with The Roots backing her) on Friday night. This lady has major talent - just ask her Grammy Award! Michael "Mike D" Diamond, Adam "MCA" Yauch, and Adam "Ad-Rock" Horovitz of the Beastie Boys are on LNWJF tonight!
5 Things You Did Not Know About the Beastie Boys (unless you read their Wikipedia page)
1. Beastie Boys came together in 1979 as a punk band called The Young Aborigines.
2. The name "Beastie" is sometimes thought originally to have stood for "Boys Entering Anarchistic States Towards Internal Excellence," and that the initials B.B. intended to mimic Washington DC hardcore punk band Bad Brains, but these were actually afterthoughts once the band's name was already Beastie Boys, according to Mike D and MCA.
3. Their first rap track, "Cooky Puss," was based on a prank call by the group to Carvel Ice Cream. It became a hit in New York underground dance clubs upon its release.
4. Sal Governale, a writer on the staff of the Howard Stern Show, indicated on air on July 25, 2007, that he was the president of the Beastie Boys fan club in the 1980s on the Prodigy computer network.
5. In the November 2004 issue, Rolling Stone Magazine named "Sabotage" the 475th song on their 500 Greatest Songs of All Time list. In their April 2005 Rolling Stone Magazine ranked them #77 on their list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.

On tonight's show, The Lonely Island (Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone, and Akiva Schaffer) performed their hilarious single "I'm On A Boat" off their album, Incredibad. This was the first time they've performed the song live, and with The Roots backing them (in appropriate boating attire), choreographed booty dancing, an inflatable dolphin, and a stagehand-operated boat in the background...well, do I need to even tell you how awesome it was? See for yourself:
Wait...is somebody on a boat, motherf**ker?
Are you guys watching American Idol this season? I am. Allison Iraheta, I will miss you. Your performance of Alone was my favorite of this season so far. It's been a fun season (then again, it usually is) and we're now down to the final three. American Idol judge Randy Jackson is on the show tonight.
5 Things You Did Not Know About Randy Jackson (unless you read his Wikipedia page)
1. While living in the San Francisco bay area, Jackson played in bands with Carlos Santana and Jerry Garcia. From 1986 to 1987 he was a member of the rock group Journey. Jackson joined Journey for their 1986 album Raised on Radio and subsequent tour.
2. In 1985, Keith Richards was asked to provide music for the Whoopi Goldberg comedy vehicle Jumpin' Jack Flash. Richards assembled an all-star band which included Aretha Franklin on piano and lead vocals and Randy Jackson on bass guitar. This song was the fourth track on Aretha's 1986 album titled "Aretha." Randy can be seen in the song's video.
3. Jackson was the bass guitarist on the 1991 self-titled Divinyls album (which features the song I Touch Myself). That same year, Jackson also played bass on Bruce Springsteen's hit Human Touch.
4. Jackson has recorded, produced, or toured with many well-known artists and bands, ranging from Mariah Carey to 'NSYNC, Whitney Houston, (produced) Dionne Farris', Céline Dion, Fergie (dating back to her days in Wild Orchid), Stryper, Whitesnake (he took over when former bassist broke his arm for a couple shows in the late 80s), and Madonna (he played some bass on her album Like a Prayer).
5. He has also worked as an executive, spending eight years as vice president of artists and repertoire (A&R) at Columbia Records and four years heading A&R at MCA Records.
Rumor has it that from the studio, Ben Harper and Relentless7 were the loudest (in a good way) musical guests we've had on LNWJF so far. You can see this kick-ass performance (am I allowed to say that?) by clicking HERE.

I'm going to take us back to a different time, a safer time, a time before animal flu outbreaks, a time when Sara Watkins and John Paul Jones appeared together on the LNWJF stage. Yes, that's the John Paul Jones from Led Zeppelin playing with Sara Watkins on the show from April 13th. It's a great performance and you can watch it HERE.

This week, the show is on hiatus but the blog NEVER SLEEPS. If you miss the show, don't worry, it's on-line. It's called 2009 people. Anyway, one of my favorite moments on the show thus far that you may have missed was N.E.R.D.'s performance of a new song called "Soldier." It was super awesome. Check it out here!

What were some of your favorite musical performances on the show?
On Friday's show, Cold War Kids performed their song "Relief." It was a fantastic way to end a fantastic first month of shows, don't you think? If you're not aware of the awesomeness that is Cold War Kids, please watch the performance! They rocked it.

More about Cold War Kids here.
Not an April Fool's joke: the English indie rock band Gomez performed last night on the show, and it was great. Did you miss it? It's okay, don't feel bad. That's what the internet is for! Watch their performance here.

Also, follow Gomez on Twitter!
Twitter has been everywhere lately. From our very own Bryan Brinkman Experiment, to Congressmen, to jurors, to viral videos, to Rick Sanchez, to my dad joining...
...And now we have a delightful Twitter Song from super-duper indie-pop singer-songwriter, Ingrid Michaelson. Her videos have been steadily getting millions of plays on the internet and she is an active Twitter participant. She recorded the Twitter Song on the fly during some downtime of a recent recording session.
Enjoy.
Our music booker, Jonathan Cohen, was the one lucky dude from LNWJF who got to go to the South By Southwest Music Festival in Austin, Texas. I'm sure we'll be seeing some of the bands he scouted soon on the show! Here are some pictures and memories from Jonathan's trip.
"The Hold Steady kept the party going next door at Club Deville with a rapturously received set of fists-in-the-air barroom rock'n'roll ("Constructive Summer," "Your Little Hoodrat Friend"), made all the cooler by the stage being tucked into a natural rock formation at the back of the venue."
